u6s

Welcome to the u6s for the 2010-11 season...

The under 6 age group is one of the most popular and successful groups at the club and we look forward to welcoming new players and continuing this success in 2010/11. Why not come down, see what we do and give it a go - the u6s get to develop key skills, meet new friends, learn about working together, play with a ball that is the correct shape and most importantly - have a whole lot of fun!!

What is mini tag rugby?

Mini tag rugby is a fun, safe, non contact form of rugby developed by the RFU for young players to be introduced to the game. Tag rugby is a simple game, consisting of a small set of rules - which makes it an ideal introduction for children to develop skills, co-ordination and teamwork.

  • Teams are made up of 7 players
  • Players wear belts with Velcro tags
  • A tackle is made on the player with the ball by removing one of the tags
  • Players must stay on their feet
  • Players pass the ball sideways or backwards
  • No physical contact or kicking of the ball is allowed

Who can come?

Boys and Girls in Year 1- children must be five years old on the 1st of September 2010 to play for the u6s

Reception children once they have turned 5 years old - providing that there are places still available.

When do we train?

The u6s train every Sunday from 5 September 2010 until late-April between 10:00 and 11:30.

Registration is the first 3 weeks of the season - just pop into the Clubhouse and look for the u6s. If you can't make it to the registration sessions in the first 3 weeks - don't worry just come and find us.

What do we do?

The emphasis of every session is helping the boys and girls develop their individual and team skills in a safe environment - but above all else - HAVING FUN and enjoying their rugby!

Sessions are run by RFU qualified and CRB checked coaches with essential assistance from willing parents! A typical session consists of a warm-up, individual skills, team skills and finishing off with a game or two.

As the children get older (u7s age group onwards) we start playing the occasional friendly against other clubs and entering festivals - both hugely enjoyable and great experiences.

It's important to .....

Volunteer - don't wait to be asked - the age group can only run through the work of volunteers.

A few of the ways you can help:

Coaching - you do not have to be an experienced coach just the fact that you want to get involved is enough and remember we are dealing with 5 year olds ... how hard can it be !!!!

First Aid - this is a really important role and we really need people to help with rubbing a sore knee, wiping mud out of an eye or applying the "magic water"!

Registration - Sunday mornings can be hectic - volunteers are needed to assist with registration and making sure we know who is at the session on a weekly basis

General - every few weeks the u6s age group are responsible for the parking and Clubhouse clear-up - as the saying goes - many hands make light work

There are lots of ways in which parents can help make training fun and run smoothly so please do not wait for someone else to do it!

Arrive in time - players should be pitch-side at 09.45so we can start the training on time at 10:00am.

Wear appropriate clothing and footwear

Suitable sports clothes for rugby, including layers so they can easily adjust as they get warmer or colder and pack a waterproof top.

Trainers are ok at the start of the season while the ground is still hard - however as it gets muddier players should wear boots with metal safety studs (the ones with rounded ends), not plastic and not blades. Even though at this age the sport is non-contact - non-safety studs / blades can wear into sharp edges.

Bring a drink and a snack - Players should bring a full water bottle and ideally a healthy snack such as a banana.

Be responsible - Parents or other responsible adults must stay pitch side (or volunteer to coach!) during training.

Make use of the Clubhouse after the session - Bring some money so players (and mum & dad!) can enjoy a drink or bite to eat in the clubhouse after training and maybe watch some of the other teams in action!
