Chobham u11s win Winchester Festival
Chobham v Havant
Chobham dominated the early exchanges with a pattern of play that was to become familiar all day long. Strong driving and rucking, quick ball to the scrum half and the ball moved quickly wide along the whole back line.
The first try resulted from determined rucking by Cameron, Ben G and Jordan on the right touchline, the ball then being passed along the back line right across the pitch. A brilliant reverse pass by Harry to Adam, completely wrong-footed the defence and created the opening for Adam to dive in for the try (1-0).
A Havant clearance kick was caught by Luke at the halfway line. In a fine solo effort, Luke burst through the defence to score (2-0).
Chobham’s third try was a repeat of the second. Luke caught a Havant kick in his own half and ran it back to score with Adam and Harry in close support (3-0).
Chobham’s fourth try was the result of another big drive by the forwards, with the ball being subsequently moved left to right along the back line. Alex received the ball on the right touchline and a short burst of acceleration and a determined second effort carried him over the try line (4-0).
Chobham’s fifth try was very similar, the forwards driving and rucking, the ball moved wide and finished off by a powerful run from Alex, to score (5-0) (HT).
Oliver C, Robert, Oliver W, Fraser and William came on at half time and the pattern of play continued seamlessly. The highlight of the second half was a move started by a great pick-up off his toes by Duncan, a clever interchange of play between Nick and Alex, resulting in Nick scoring from close-in (6-0).
Match ended.
Chobham v Petersfield
The second pool match was similar to the first; in that Chobham were largely able control the passages of play, with some fine tackling by Fraser on the wing. A well worked move between Adam and Ben W and a big drive by Cameron, resulted in Ben W scoring in the corner from close-in (1-0).
Chobham’s second try resulted from the ball being worked along the line in their own half to Luke, who cut-inside and scored with another powerful run (2-0).
There were a number of instances of quick interchanges freezing the defence. One move between Fraser and William almost led to a try, with Ben L being knocked into touch in the corner, just before he could put the ball down.
A quick interchange between Fraser and Robert created the opening for Luke to run in his second try of the match (3-0) (HT).
A high tackle resulted in a Chobham penalty five metres out from the Petersfield line. A solid drive and ruck with Oliver W and Robert particularly in evidence, provided the platform for Ben W to dive over in the corner (4-0).
A good passing move between Nick and Ben L was halted by a slightly forward pass.
A powerful scrum five yards out, allowed Ben W to gather the ball and score his third try of the match (5-0).
Chobham’s sixth try followed a familiar pattern. Powerful driving and rucking by the forwards and a score by Ben W from close-in(6-0).
Match ended.
Chobham v New Milton
This match, between two teams who had won both their previous matches was an altogether sterner test for Chobham and would decide who won the group.
A very tight first half was characterised by determined forward play and hard tackling in midfield from both teams. Notable highlights being one particularly crunching tackle from Ben W and some spirited running by Nick.
At half time the teams were separated by a single try. Following good work again by Jordan and Ben G; fifteen yards out, Matthew burst through the New Milton defence, out-sprinted their backs and scored in the corner (1-0) (HT).
The second half was played almost entirely in Chobham’s half, with the boys withstanding repeated attacks on the Chobham line. The forwards were absolutely rock solid in the scrums and fully committed in the rucks. The backs played their part, with determined tackling by all.
New Milton kicked into Chobham’s corner at every opportunity, but couldn’t break through from the resulting line outs. In response, astute tactical kicking to touch, by Duncan provided some respite.
Chobham held on, but it was a close run thing.
Chobham v Teddington (Final)
Teddington had won a very strong pool, so Chobham were under no illusions that this would be anything other than a very tough match.
Early on, a smart kick by Harry was almost gathered in by Alex at full speed.
Chobham produced repeated strong forward drives, with Matthew, Olllie C and Robert to the fore. But couldn’t they break through the Teddington defence.
Teddington began to come more into the game and it took a crunching tackle by Luke, five metres out, to prevent a certain try.
Chobham developed their tactics as the game wore on, with both Luke and William repeatedly chasing their own kicks into the heart of the Teddington defence.
The Chobham forwards were able to impose themselves on a scrum ten metres from Teddington’s line. Quick ball passed along the backs allowed Luke to burst through Teddington’s backs to score the game’s only try (1-0).
Chobham continued to use their kicking game to gain territory, with one great kick from William being collected by Duncan only five yards from Teddington’s line.
Another hard fought match and a victory that enabled Chobham to lift the Cup.
Squad: Matthew, Oliver C, Robert, Cameron, Jordan, Ben G, Oliver W, Fraser, Duncan, Luke, William, Nick, Ben W, Harry, Ben L, Alex, Adam

Chobham u11s win Chobham C Festival
Chobham 14 - 0 Sutton and Epsom Tries: Jack & Gianni. Cons: Jack x 2 For an opening game the boys came out totally fired up and determined to play well. An awesome display of teamwork included great strength from the forwards who dominated a much heavier pack, behind whom the backs kept good shape. The play at the breakdown was a revelation and the backs put in some fantastic running and tackling to win the game. Chobham 0 - 12 Cobham Having started so well in the first game the boys let Cobham run at them in the first half and conceded two tries. That said they showed true character and came out in the second half setting up camp throughout in Cobham territory, thoroughly over-running them. But in the end it's points on the board that matter and the team had a disallowed try from Gianni from taking a penalty too quickly. Chobham 5 - 0 Teddington Try: Christophe The next game against the old enemy was close. Yet again the boys' commitment was awesome and the forward power yet again dominated and led to Christophe crossing the line. The boys dominated in every area of the park and deserved to score more. Whilst the backs ran well the rucking and driving of the forwards again gave the platform for victory. Chobham 12 - 7 Reeds Tries: Christophe & Alex. Con: Jack Having conceded an early try to the speed of Reeds running the boys dug in and showed true determination to come back. They found their stride and by keeping their heads up started to dominate. Twice they were stopped a foot short of the Reeds' line before the continuous pressure enabled Christophe to break away from the breakdown to cross the line for the first try. This was then followed up by a great run from the penalty to cross by Alex to seal the game. Chobham 31 - 0 Rosslyn Park Tries: Patrick, Gianni, Christophe, Oscar & Luke. Cons: Jack x 2, Joel With Teddington withdrawing and Cobham having lost two games the festival was thrown wide open and the boys needed to win by 7 points to claim victory. They did all that was asked of them and more with confident exhibition display of rugby quickly putting the outcome beyond doubt with two great runs from the half way line to score from Patrick and Gianni.

Sunday 18 October
Chobham u11s joint winners at Chobham A Festival
In their second outing of the season the A squad worked hard and deserved to come away joint winners with Cobham, not having lost a game or conceded a single try. Chobham 7 - 0 Cobham Try: Nick and conversion Harry The boys came out fighting for the first game and seemed better prepared mentally than Cobham. The first half was fairly equal but the boys kept on the pressure and in the second half the game was played in Cobham’s half. A massive drive and relentless pressure on their line was rewarded with a try when the ball was passed out wide to the wing for Nick to score. Chobham 0 - 0 Teddington The second game was a little more scrappy, but the boys showed commitment, hard tackling from Fraser, Harry and Luke. The second half saw Chobham encamped in the Teddington half, constant pressure but did not take their chances to drive over for a score. Chobham 21 - 0 Kings Tries Nick, Ollie and Alex. 3 Conversions Harry The boys got the chance to both drive and move the ball around more this time. The game saw some strong and robust tackling all round, dominant rucking and stoic defence on our own line. Chobham 21 - 0 Wimbledon Tries Ben Watts, Robert Cloete, Luke and Nick, 2 conversions Duncan, 2 conversions Harry A confident start taking the game to Wimbledon quickly seeing Ben go over, followed by a great drive from a penalty by Robert. We then absorbed the Wimbledon pressure before a big overlap saw Luke easily cross the line and Harry convert the 2 points. The game was truly sealed by a run from the half way line by Nick, determined as ever with his head down. Chobham 0 - 0 Guildford The festival closed with a draw despite our boys being encamped on the Guildford line in the first half but being unable to drive home their advantage. The second half saw Guildford pressurise our boys and they absorbed that well but were unable to break out to make the vital score that would have made them sole winners for the day.

Sunday 11 October
Chobham u11s at Wimbledon B Festival
After a good opening festival at home the week before, the u11s B squad, a little changed from the previous week to give some new faces a chance to show us what they can do, travelled to Wimbledon with expectations running high.
Richmond v Chobham
Our opening match saw us pitched against Richmond, and we picked up where we had left off the week before. Chobham’s aggression was good throughout and our forward dominance finally paid dividends when Oliver Wickes broke through to score mid way through the second half. Conversion made and Chobham came out deserved 7-0 winners.
Camberley v Chobham
Chobham’s second outing of the day saw us up against Camberley. This was a very aggressive match with the Chobham team giving just as good as they got from Camberley. Some great defensive play and strong tackling from Chobham kept Camberley at bay. Chobham almost sneaked the points when Max Blair was clean through only for the referee to call him back due to an injury on the pitch. A bruising game finally finished 0-0.
Esher v Chobham
After the bruising game earlier, and with little rest in between matches, Chobham took on Esher in a game they really should have won. Defensively we were solid again with some great tackling from all the players. Unfortunately our backs just could not seem to get the ball wide for our pace men to score and make use of the platform set for them by the forwards. A disappointing game ended in another 0-0 draw.
Guildfordians v Chobham
Having drawn our last two games we needed to win the last to progress in the competition. This was a very hard fought and even contest between two well matched sides, both defending well and neither seeming to be able to find a way through. Unfortunately an uncharacteristic lapse in concentration late in the second half by Chobham, let Guildfordians in. Heads now down and somewhat tired, Chobham allowed Guildfordians to score again just before the end.
The results over the past two festivals do not do justice to the hard work and effort of all the players that have taken part in the 2 B Festivals to date. A great platform from which to build and a few tweaks here and there and the results will come.
Tries Maxwell Blair, Ollie Campbell, Alex Dummer, Freddie Goodhand. Conversions x2 Jonny Luck Chobham 0 - 7 Teddington Aldershot and Fleet 10 - 17 Chobham
Tries Jack Parfitt, Toby Williams, Luke Smith. Conversion Jonny Luck Chobham 5 - 0 London Irish
Try Freddie Goodhand Cobham 15 - 0 Chobham

Sunday 4 October
Chobham u11s at Cobham A Festival
Today marked the start of the Festival season with both Cobham A Festival and the Chobham B Festival taking place on the same day. Generally a good day for the u11s who showed off new skills with the inclusion of kicking and additional players on the field.
Game 1 - Chobham v Maidenhead (7-0)
The first half of this game Chobham dominated play within the Maidenhead half with the majority of possession. Play finished at halftime with no score as these two well matched sides battled it out. The second half started with a good kick from Duncan and following a penalty given to Chobham, Luke made a tremendous run for the try line and opened the score for Chobham. A conversion followed by Harry. The game continued with some unfortunate penalties being awarded against Chobham with Maidenhead hitting back hard. Some good strategic kicks being made by Chobham held the opposition at bay resulting in our first victory.
Game 2 – Chobham v Brighton (35-0)
What a game. The team came alive and operated as a well coordinated unit. Within the first minute Alex scored the first try followed by a conversion from Harry. Two minutes later Adam scored a try which was again converted by Harry. With excellent delivery from the forwards and fast backs play the third try was scored by Cameron and converted by Harry taking the play to halftime. Play restarted in the second half with the Chobham forwards dominating Brighton and after a big drive Matthew B scored the fourth try and again well converted by Harry. Brighton hit back with a deep kick caught by Luke who ran the ball straight back at them and burst through their defence to score the final try which was converted by Duncan. An excellent game demonstrating the strength of the Chobham team.
Game 3 – Chobham v Battersea Ironsides (7-14)
This game was the first semi-final match and turned out to be the toughest game of the day. The two well matched sides battled hard and Chobham broke through with the first try from Luke and conversion from Harry. Battersea hit back hard and just before halftime scored a try and conversion. The second half started on level pegging with a number of referee decisions going against Chobham and a lucky break by Battersea resulted in the final try and conversion against Chobham. A tough game and an unlucky final result.
Game 4 – Chobham v Brighton (14-0) Bowl Final
After the semi-final defeat we played Brighton again for the Bowl. Brighton were fired up after the last game and defended well. Chobham dominated play and after taking the ball inside the Brighton half, Nick scored a try which was converted by Harry ending the first half. Play started with Chobham dominance and after some excellent work from our forwards, Matthew B powered through to score the final try of the day followed by a conversion from Harry, and along with Duncan displayed some very consistent kicking throughout the day.
